With Reading Power Zone enabled for the student, based on their assessed Lexile measure, they will be placed in the appropriate Lexile band within the Reading Power Zone. 350L is the lowest Lexile measure a student can have to gain access to the Reading Power Zone.
If it is the students’ first time being placed in the Reading Power Zone, they will see an indication of their new option on the Mission Control page right after the assessment or after the teacher's manual assignment.
Intermediate
Intermediate Users can also enter the Reading Power Zone via a dropdown in the navigation bar.
No Regression Rule
Once a student is placed in a Lexile band assignment, they will not be moved down to a lower Lexile band or removed from Reading Power Zone, by the system based on their assessment result. The teacher can adjust students’ Lexile bands down and remove Reading Power Zone access, but the system will not.
Assignment in the Reading Power Zone
Reading Power Zone is made up of a series of assignments. A Floor of materials equates to an assignment.
No Assignment Interruption Rule
Once a student is placed in a Lexile band assignment, they will not be interrupted in the middle of a Reading Power Zone assignment, by the system. This is done so that a student doesn’t appear to lose progress when they get a new automatic placement. It makes for a smooth transition between automated assignments.
This means:
If the assignment is changed based on the student’s performance in the assessment, the change will not immediately take place. Instead, the student will need to complete their current assignment in order to see the content of their new assignment (on the next Floor).
If the teacher placed the student into the Reading Power Zone manually (ahead of the assessment), the system will not adjust the student to a Reading Power Zone assignment that is lower (ie; a set of materials that aligns to a lower Lexile measure) than their current assignment. The teacher will need to make that change, and it will take effect right away.
If a teacher makes the Listens required for Reading Power Zone, the change will not take effect for the student until they move to their next assignment (aka Floor).
If content is refined out of a Floor, it will not impact a student if they are already working on that Floor.
Manual Vs. Assessment Placement
Teachers can manually change a student’s assignment by changing the student’s Lexile level in the Roster to a new Lexile measure outside of the current band. This change will immediately update the student’s assignment and they will start at subgroup one of the new band.
The teacher’s manual selection trumps the system’s placement.
