Recording Problems

We recommend the following steps for any computer that is having trouble recording:

  • Make sure an external microphone is plugged into the correct jack.

  • Make sure the microphone is not muted.

  • Update your browser:

  • Try clearing the browser’s cache.

  • Check your system settings to ensure compatibility. If you receive a red “x” you will need to update the specific programs.

  • Log in to www.kidsa-z.com and try recording. You may see a drop-down menu or pop-up asking for permission to use the microphone. Please be sure to choose Allow.

If these do not resolve the issue please try the advanced steps for your browser.

Firefox

First, clear the cache and restart Firefox:

  1. Click the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the upper-right corner.

  2. Select Options.

  3. Select the Privacy and Security tab.

  4. Click Clear History.

  5. Choose Everything from the Time Range drop-down menu.

  6. Check all five options under History.

  7. Click Clear Now.

  8. Restart Firefox.

Now, try recording again:

  1. Log in to www.kidsa-z.com as a student.

  2. Open the desired book.

  3. Click the microphone icon to open the recording menu.

  4. Click the red record icon.

  5. In the pop-up in the upper left, check Remember this decision.

  6. Click Allow.

Chrome on a PC or Mac

First, clear the cache and restart Chrome:

  1. Click the menu button (three dots in a vertical line) in the upper-right corner (if an update is available, it may appear as an up arrow).

  2. Hover over More tools in the drop-down menu.

  3. Click Clear Browsing Data… in the sub-menu.

  4. In the new window, click Advanced and set the Time range to All time.

  5. Check the top 4 options:

    • Browsing history

    • Download history

    • Cookies and other site data

    • Cached images and files

  6. Click Clear data.

  7. When the pop-up window closes, restart Chrome.

Next, allow the microphone and pop-ups for Kids A-Z:

  1. Open Chrome and go to www.kidsa-z.com.

  2. Click the lock icon in the address bar (this affects the settings for Kids A-Z only).

  3. Select Site settings in the drop-down menu.

  4. Set the Microphone to Allow.

  5. Set Pop-ups and redirects to Allow.

If this does not resolve the issue, you may need to update Chrome to the latest version:

  1. Click the menu button (three dots in a vertical line) in the upper-right corner.

    • If an update is available, it may appear as an up arrow.

  2. Hover over Help.

  3. Click About Google Chrome.

    • If an update is available, it will start updating automatically.

  4. Restart browser after updates are installed.

You may need to clear the cache and restart Chrome again after the browser is updated. Clearing the cache may reset microphone and pop-up settings.

Chrome on a Chromebook

First, clear the cache and restart the Chromebook:

  1. Click the menu button (three dots in a vertical line) in the upper-right corner.

  2. Hover over More tools in the drop-down menu.

  3. Click Clear Browsing Data… in the sub-menu.

  4. In the new window, click Advanced and set the Time range to All time.

  5. Check the top 4 options:

    • Browsing history

    • Download history

    • Cookies and other site data

    • Cached images and files

  6. Click Clear data.

  7. When the pop-up window closes, restart the Chromebook.

Next, allow the microphone and pop-ups for Kids A-Z:

  1. Open Chrome and go to www.kidsa-z.com.

  2. Click the lock icon in the address bar (this affects the settings for Kids A-Z only).

  3. Select Site settings in the drop-down menu.

  4. Set the Microphone to Allow.

  5. Set Pop-ups and redirects to Allow.

If this does not resolve the issue, you may need to update the Chrome operating system (OS) to the latest version:

  1. Click the WiFi icon in the lower-right corner.

  2. Select the settings icon (looks like a gear) in the pop-up window.

  3. Click the menu button (three horizontal bars) in the upper-left corner.

  4. Click About OS.

  5. Click Check for updates.

  6. Restart after updates are installed.

You may need to clear the cache and restart again after the OS is updated. Clearing the cache will reset these settings.

Edge

First, clear the cache:

  1. Click the menu button (three dots in a vertical line) in the upper right-hand corner.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Click Choose what to clear under Clear Browsing Data.

  4. Check the following options:

    • Browsing history

    • Cookies and saved website data

    • Cached data and files

    • Download history

  5. Click Clear.

  6. Close and restart Edge once cache is cleared.

Alternately:

  1. Click the Hub icon (shooting star) to the right of the web-address bar.

  2. Select History from the left sidebar.

  3. Select Clear History.

  4. Check the following options:

    • Browsing history

    • Cookies and saved website data

    • Cached data and files

    • Download history

  5. Click Clear.

  6. Close and restart Edge once cache is cleared.

Next, enable the microphone:

  1. Click the Start/Menu button (Windows icon).

  2. Scroll down and select Settings.

  3. Choose Privacy.

  4. Select Microphone from the left sidebar.

  5. Click Change under Microphone access for this device is Off.

  6. Toggle to On.

When students click the Record button, a pop-up will be seen on the bottom of the page. Click Yes to allow Kids A-Z to access the microphone.

Safari

First, clear the cache:

  1. Click Safari in the upper left-hand side of your screen.

  2. Click Preferences.

  3. Select the Privacy tab.

  4. Click Remove All Website Data.

  5. Click Remove Now in the pop-up window.

Next, enable the microphone:

  1. Click Safari in the upper left-hand side of your screen.

  2. Click Preferences.

  3. Select Security.

  4. Click the Manage Website Settings button.

  5. Click on Java in the left column.

  6. Click the Trust button in the window that appears.

  7. Click Done to apply your changes.
