Determining a Student's Reading Level in Reading A-Z

Updated over 3 weeks ago

🔹 Step 1: Reading & Running Records

Start by having the student read a Benchmark Passage or Benchmark Book (Levels aa–J).

  • Choose a level that matches the student’s age or grade.

  • Use the Running Record to observe and score:

    • Accuracy

    • Fluency

    • Self-corrections

📝 You may need to try more than one level to find the best fit.

For Spanish-speaking students, use Spanish Benchmark Passages (Pasajes estándar).

🔹 Step 2: Retelling Rubric

After reading, ask the student to retell the story or passage in their own words.

  • Use the Retelling Rubric to evaluate their comprehension.

🔹 Step 3: Comprehension Quick Check Quiz

Next, have the student take a Comprehension Quick Check Quiz (oral or written).

  • These are multiple-choice quizzes that come with each Benchmark Passage or Book.

  • Each question is tagged with the comprehension skill it assesses.

  • Use the results to:

    • Identify strengths

    • Target areas for additional instruction
