What are Read-Retell-Respond Assessments?
Read-Retell-Respond Assessments measure three key areas of reading:
Read: Students read a passage aloud to demonstrate fluency and accuracy.
Retell: Students retell the passage in their own words to demonstrate their ability to construct meaning from a text.
Respond: Students answer questions to demonstrate overall comprehension.
How do I administer a Read-Retell-Respond Assessment?
Step 1: Assign & Prepare
Select a grade-level passage based on Lexile® data and your instructional goals.
Preview the passage before assigning it.
Review the available scoring tools:
Fluency Rubric
Fiction Retelling Rubric
Nonfiction Retelling Rubric
Select Assign and choose the students who will complete the assessment.
After the assessment is assigned, students automatically receive the retelling task and quiz after completing the reading.
Step 2: Students Complete the Assessment
Students complete three parts:
Part 1: Read
Students read the passage aloud using the built-in recording tools. The recording allows teachers to evaluate reading fluency and accuracy.
Part 2: Retell
Students record a retelling of the passage in their own words. This helps teachers evaluate how well students understand and construct meaning from the text.
Part 3: Respond
Students complete the quiz to demonstrate their overall comprehension of the passage.
Submitted recordings are automatically sent to the teacher's In Basket. Quiz results are saved in Skill Reports.
Step 3: Review & Score
Read: Score Fluency
Listen to the student's recorded reading and use the Fluency Rubric to evaluate:
Reading accuracy
Fluency
Strengths
Areas for improvement
Retell: Score Comprehension
Listen to the student's retelling and use the appropriate Fiction Retelling Rubric or Nonfiction Retelling Rubric to evaluate:
Understanding of key ideas and details
Ability to construct meaning
Comprehension strengths
Areas where additional support may be needed
Respond: Review Quiz Results
Review student performance in Skill Reports to identify areas of understanding and difficulty at the question level.
Step 4: Use the Data
Use the results from all three parts to develop a complete picture of each student's reading skills.
Fluency: Consider how accurately and fluently the student reads.
Retelling: Evaluate how well the student communicates key ideas and details.
Quiz: Review overall comprehension and performance on individual questions.
Instruction: Adjust instruction based on identified strengths and needs.
Progress: Assign passages with increasing complexity as students develop their reading skills.
