Content Refinement

Written by Marcella Santisteban

Content Refinement allows schools and districts to control which Learning A-Z resources are available to users on their account.

Schools and districts can refine content based on their educational, cultural, and social priorities. Refined content is hidden or unavailable to users, helping teachers and students focus on the resources that are most appropriate for their needs.

Who Can Edit Content Refinement?

Only the Account Owner/License Coordinator can create or change Content Refinement settings.

  • Account Owner: Can edit Content Refinement settings.

  • License Coordinator: Can edit Content Refinement settings.

  • Teachers: Cannot edit Content Refinement settings.

  • Students: Cannot edit Content Refinement settings.

Please note: Content Refinement settings apply to all users on the account.

Why Was Content Refinement Created?

Customers told Learning A-Z that it could be difficult to find the most relevant resources using existing search and filtering tools.

Content Refinement was created to give schools and districts more control over the resources available to their users and to make it easier for educators to find appropriate content.

What Can Be Refined?

Content Refinement can be used to make resource types, languages, activities, or individual resources unavailable.

Resource Types

You can refine the following types of resources:

  • Languages — Select languages that you want to make unavailable to all users on the account. If new resources are added in an excluded language, those resources will also be excluded.

  • Student Activities — Select activity types that you want to make unavailable to all users on the account. If new activities are added in an excluded type, they will also be excluded.

  • Book Quizzes

  • Listen Versions

  • Raz-Plus Reading Growth Assessments — Available to Raz-Plus customers

  • Individual Resource Filters — Select specific resources to make unavailable.

What Do Teachers See?

Schools and districts can choose whether teachers receive notifications when content has been refined.

If notifications are enabled:

  • Teachers may see that a resource exists.

  • Teachers cannot access the refined resource.

  • A message will tell the teacher that the content has been refined.

  • Teachers cannot override or change the refinement.

If notifications are disabled, teachers will not receive these refinement notifications.

What Do Students See?

Students will not see refined content.

Refined resources are unavailable to students and cannot be accessed or assigned.

What Happens to Resources That Are Already Assigned?

If a resource is refined after it has already been assigned or saved in a teacher's File Cabinet, it will be removed immediately.

After the resource is refined:

  • Teachers can no longer assign the resource.

  • The resource is no longer available in the teacher's File Cabinet.

  • Students cannot access the refined resource.

Completed Assignments

Completed assignments that contain refined content will remain available in Student Activity reports.

Raz-Kids and Raz-Plus Español Level Up Assignments

If refined content is included in the Raz-Kids or Raz-Plus Español Level Up assignment, that content will be removed. As a result, students will have fewer tasks to complete to advance in the Raz-Kids or Raz-Plus Español Level Up.
