Skill Building resources on Writing A-Z provide teachers a collection of downloadable or projectable mini-lessons that focus on individual elements of composition for the purpose of strengthening students' writing skills. Each Skill Lesson includes developmentally appropriate resources for each student's writing level.

Conventions Lessons cover the basics appropriate to each level of writer, including elements such as capitalization, grammar, paragraphing, and spelling.

Endings Skill Lessons teach students how to create compelling endings to their compositions. Whether a summary in nonfiction, or the solution to a problem in fiction, endings use descriptions and strong vocabulary to create pictures in readers' minds that provide a feeling of closure.

Openings Skill Lessons teach students how to effectively write introductions to their original compositions. Effective openings for compositions capture a reader's attention.

Sentence Skill Lessons help students learn to write sentences that are clear and accurate. Lessons show students how to create different kinds of sentences, including simple, compound, and complex sentences.

Word Choice Skill Lessons improve students' writing to make it more interesting and precise by providing students strategies to improve word choice, such as using a thesaurus.
