Emerging Writing resources on Writing A-Z provide teachers downloadable & projectable lessons and resources to teach pre-kindergarteners, kindergarteners, and other emerging writers who are just beginning to experiment with letters, sounds, words, and the overall function and structure of language.
Lessons provide a logical and natural sequence for students as they move from single pictures with one-word labels to more complex sentences.
Alphabet Resources support letter and word recognition. Being able to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet is an important early writing step. Ruled exercise sheets for each letter of the alphabet provide practice in uppercase and lowercase letter formation.
Prompts help students with basic composition skills. Encourage original compositions with stage-appropriate sentence frames, or text prompts that provide high-frequency words to begin a sentence that can be finished in a variety of ways.
Word Work provides high-frequency word practice, as well as vocabulary practice with words students may know orally but not in writing. Word Work resources also support emerging writers as they move from labeling pictures to creating more complex sentence structures.
